were first recorded in India, by the present writers in Rao and Ray (1932). Since then, other workers, notable among them being Muir and Chatterjee (1932 and 1933) and Chatterjee (1933), have-attempted to study the action of Mercurochrome as well as that of one of its constituents, viz, fluorescein, in leprosy. Ryrie (1934) has further continued to study the influence of fluorescein on ' lepra reaction', and has concluded that in a fairly large proportion of such reacting cases, fluorescein appears to be

Effects of Lepra Reaction in Lepromatous Leprosy £;

In 1936 I was a joint author of an article [Rev. brasileira L eprol. 4 (1936) 129] in which it was asserted that: (a) lepra reaction is beneficial because it impedes the progress of the disease and improves the skin lesions; and (b) in such cases ocular lesions are less frequent than in those which never had reaction. In 1947 I reported [Rev. argentina Dermatosi f. 31 (1947) 506] that (a ) lepr...

Synthesis and Applicationof New Fluorescein Analogues

In this project, new derivatives of fluorescein were synthesized using the reaction of maleic anhydride and saccharin with phenol derivatives in the presence of ZnCl2, and their structures were elucidated by UV, IR, and NMR spectroscopy. Fluorimetry studies showed that, the synthesized compounds can be utilized as fluorescent agents, and their efficiencies were dependent on pH of solution. Acco...

Effectiveness of Methotrexate in prednisolone and thalidomide resistant cases of Type 2 lepra reaction: report on three cases.

Type 2 lepra reactions, and its cutaneous manifestation, Erythema Nodosum Leprosum (ENL) are an immune complex mediated systemic condition, often complicating the disease and/or its treatment in cases of the lepromatous spectrum of leprosy. Prednisolone and thalidomide are the mainstay for the treatment of Type 2 lepra reactions. According to the guidelines set out by the WHO and the National L...

Keratosis spinulosa developing in borderline-tuberculoid lesions during type I lepra reaction: two case reports.

Two cases of borderline-tuberculoid leprosy which developed keratosis spinulosa over the anaesthetic areas alone during type I lepra reactions are described. Both patients only developed spiny papules during the period of reaction and subsided with control of the reaction. The probable mechanism of this peculiar phenomenon might be due to the generation of epidermal growth factors by local T ce...

A case of lepra reaction treated with cortropine (ACTH).

Lepra reaction is seldom seen in Norway, only one such case having been observed since 1931. The number of cases of active leprosy in Norway during this period was, however, very small. It is possible that lepra reaction is an expression of an increased salutary process, and it has been maintained that the reaction depends to a certain extent on an allergic factor. It has also been pointed out ...
